I photographed a male red deer near Stalham swimming across the Ant last year. The picture is on here somewhere. Yes they can swim very well.

Paul, You need to let the Biological Records Centre know about your red deer sighting - there don't appear to be any records on the northern rivers according to the National Biodiversity Network (the other NBN) Norfolk BRC's e-mail is nbrc@norfolk.gov.uknbrc@norfolk.gov.uk Craig http://www.horning.org.uk http://boats.horning.org.uk http://broadlandarchive.horning.org.uk

Hi Craig And a Merry Christmas to you. The pictures I posted on here last year has been "swapped" for another of mine with the same file name and I,m not sure if I still have the original on my PC. The one I saw was certainly a red deer as my sons girlfriend ( Vet nurse ) confirmed the picture without any trouble. If I can find the picture I will sent it on. Thanks

What do you mean no red deer on the Northern Rivers? Well I suggest they ask the people who know about these things!!!!! There is certainly a biggish flock(?) up near Hickling and I have seen plenty of evidence of them around other parts as well. Craig - I think someone is having you on....!!!

I certainly saw a red deer as I was walking from Horsey dyke to Horsey beach last year. It crossed the path just in front of us. (Unfortunately, as we were headed for the beach to go swimming, I didn't have a camera).

Couple of years ago we saw a deer in the river Chet.It was trying to get up the bank but it was to high.We tried to get a rope around it with the intention of hauling it on the boat but it was to difficult and there was a danger of crushing it between the boat and the bank so we had to leave it.We spun round in the Yare and went back to look for it but it was gone.Hope it got out OK.Les

The problem with the NBN Gateway is that there isn't a lot of data up there yet, well not from local centres, but I'm sure the Norfolk BRC would welcome and confirmed records for interesting species - note the deer which started this thread was a Chinese water deer - these are imports and very good swimmers - now quite widespread throughout Broadland Oh and the Norfolk BRC e-mail got a bit garbled in my original e-mail, not sure why - nbrc@norfolk.gov.uk

I declare this thread closed on as weak a pun as it started. Happy New Year All.
