Hi all,
There is an 8% (4 weeks) share for sale in Moonlight Shadow at £2,999. Moonlight is an Aquafibre Pearl 38, with Perkins engine, bow thruster, electric winch, inverter and shore power and diesel warm air heating. She is moored at and maintained by Brooms, Brundall (who built her). Sleeps up to 7 and the annual running costs are about £1,200 per share (£300 per week) plus diesel and pump outs.
We bought our share earlier this year and have had a couple of great weeks on her – so good that we are coming back on Boxing Day for a week.

Just to ads to Roys comments this must be a
bargin for someone that holidays regularly on a
hire boat.
The same boat but with lower spec costs
upwards of £1200 for a week in the summer
holidays alone-the same price as the annual
running costs.
Upto 4 people can be named on the share so
you dont have to use all the weeks yourself.
I have a share on Evening Shadow and have
found the arrangement fantastic.

The purchase price may seem reasonable but the running cost of £1200 for an 8% share sounds expensive to me. That equates to £15000 per year total running cost plus fuel pump outs etc.

The running costs are about £800 per share, the other £400 is for management fees.
The £800 includes licence, insurance, mooring with power at Brooms, gas, regular servicing, winter maintenance, weekly fluids etc checked on turnround. Also built in to this amount is an allowance for breakdown cover by Brooms (a rare occurence because of the regular servicing) and small items repair/replacement. Brooms also keep an eye on the boat when moored especially in the winter re tides and freezing etc.
Fuel you would have to buy if you hire and pump outs are quite reasonable at Brooms.
The only downside is that you have to clean the boat thoroughly inside and out before leaving. (We always cleaned the inside of hire boats anyway so its just the outside cleaning that is extra to us).
Duvets and Pillows are on board but you do have to take your own bed linen and towels.
Don't forget this isn't timeshare. You would actually own 8% of the boat.
We had a share on a narrowboat in a similar managed scheme for 6 years at 4 different boatyards and Brooms service so far has been far superior to any of those canal yards.

I can only add my thoughts and experience and echo Roys comments. The shared ownership really works for us.
Yes on the face of it £15,000 might seem a lot for running costs but compared to hiring it is a great deal cheaper and for we don’t pay for car parking or diver insurance on top of the running costs! There are some syndicate boats run without a management company but in my opinion it makes things so much simpler and is worth the money. A lot of the cost comes down to what the syndicate owners want to spend. For example we have agreed to have all the batteries replaced during the winter maintenance.
ES has numerous quilts of varying sizes and togs along with pillows, in fact there are so many that once we have unloaded we place the unused ones in the car!
ES is moored at Barnes and if we are unfortunate enough to have a breakdown we ring the Barnes engineer just as if we are on a hire boat. Any costs are invoiced to BCBM who pay out of the syndicate account.
It is worth pointing out that for 8% 4 weeks is the MINIMUM you can use the boat. You can use other weeks when owners are unable to use them on a first come first served basis. This year weeks become available in April, June and August and I believe nobody is using her this week. These weeks are available for the only additional cost of diesel and pumpouts.
By the end of next year compared against hiring my share would have paid for its self and my 4% is far from worthless.
Yes you have to clean the boat before you leave it but we have agreed that you don’t need to leave the boat until 11am on a Saturday morning so plenty of time to do it. Everything, including a Dyson, is onboard to clean the boat with.
At the recent AGM we drew our weeks out of hat and where possible people swopped weeks a fair bit. Some people don’t want the school holidays, some do.

Matt/Webb, £5000 to administer a syndicate with a turnover of £15000 seems a bit rich to me but nice work if you can get it. However if the syndicate members are happy with that, then who am I to comment.

If it was that easy there would be dozens of compaines knocking on the door trying to manage the syndicate!!
they do more than purely manage administration of the syndicate, they obviously sell shares, attend boat shows (stand at the London Boat show etc), granted this will assist them in building their company but at the same time it will help to protect my asset when the time comes to sell, someone will inspect the boat and suggest what needs doing etc
They are also available 24/7 and for £100 a week its well worth the reassurance it brings.

Whether or not you think that the administration cost is high, it is still a fact that you can get 4 plus weeks holiday on the Broads for very little more than one week's peak hire on a similar boat.
