Indeed the BA can and have used 'sidecasting' to place spoil on the bank. Upton dyke was dredged by them in January this year - and the spoil was placed on the bank. The problem appears to be with the NNT, the RSPB and other land owners who may be reluctant (for reasons that can only be guessed at) to give permission for these traditional methods to be used. I have just sent out the annual invite notice this evening and have around fifteen confirmed already. The annual lads week has been going on now for literally decades. It is a week for:- Fishing, Tipple partaking, Team / single darts and dominos, Board Games, Reading, Sailing, Cruising, Goggle box watching, Eating out, Eating onboard, Male bonding (Whatever that is) Etc, Some/all/none of the afore mentioned to suit oneself. Oh and in company cruising as well. My lad GriffJnr will be skippering a youngsters boat for the age group of 18 - mid 20's as per the norm. The Lads Week is not invitation only, anyone is welcome whether you know only one other crew member or all of them (Rare is that one). 'B.A' will be pressed into service along with as many Jewel Of Lights as we need, plus sailing dinghies. We tend to do a fair amount of cruising with at least one very early start and late finish. The southern side is always visited. A night nav is sometimes undertaken onboard 'B.A' which sometimes gets used as a night liberty boat to a pub and back if required. The week is there to be enjoyed as you see fit. An experienced skipper will be allocated to each boat. For those that want to have a go at fishing there are plenty of us with spare fishing gear and knowledge to get you started. The cost of the week is divided equally between all crew members, having 'B.A' as a free boat brings down the cost somewhat although we only crew her up to six max with an all male crew. Every crew member is expected once during the week to either provide an evening dinner onboard or ashore for his crew as he sees fit, this helps keep the victualling costs down. Crew members often swap over boats during the day, we mix and match for day cruising but once your cabin/bunk is allocated it stays the same for the whole week. I will allocate crew members to boats as I see fit accommodating any requests as best as I can. Each boat will have a nominated victualler for the week. Anyone can/will do as much or as little helming as they see fit, however where difficult or more demanding scenario s occur the final decision rests with that boats skipper as he will have signed for the boat. The Friday evening before returning the boats to the yard is traditionally spent having a pub dinner and coppering up. More details to follow for those that are interested. Car sharing and travel arrangements will be notified to interested crew members at a later date There are a few simple rules to qualifying for the Lads week. 1) No girlies. (1A applies) 2) No under eighteens (1B applies) 3) No offspring unless male and eighteen plus (1 and 1B applies). 4) No 'puftas' 5) Doggy crew members allowed (Male or female) Macie will be onboard as is the norm. Exceptions – 1A) Stunning tall female lap dancers welcome. 1B) Minimum age of sixteen-ish but they are YOUR SOLE responsibility Ok I was kidding  where rule 4) is concerned, we became pc years ago and waived that one, so those that are confused or on the 'wrong bus' are now welcome but we draw the line at 'Angry Attires' ;p Since the Lads Week is an open invite I thought it only fair to extend it to male forumites. All you need is a leave pass, beer chits and your best sense of humour. Just let me know. One further point, if you commit and then cancel (After I have booked the hire boats) you will still be expected to pay for the week UNLESS you can get someone to take your place. Any takers? P.S - If you have your own boat and wish to join us for the week or part off you are more than welcome of course. In this instance all rules can be waived :| Griff 'Broad Ambition' - 'Dreams do come true' - Afloat at last 06-10-07 www.grifftile.co.uk This message was edited by BroadAmbition on Mar-11-10 @ 7:18 AM http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=23&Topic=19750&srow=1&erow=1 BroadAmbition@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (BroadAmbition) Thu, 11 Mar 2010 01:16:20 GMT Holiday Tales http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=23&Topic=19750 Coldham Hall - Re-Opening Sunday 7th March 2010 The only annoying thing about last Sunday's visit was that all the boats that where moored there at lunchtime where side on and not stern on. Pub - The Maltsters sat 8th, am Ranworth to Potter Heigham sun 9th, pm Potter Heigham - Stokesby. Pub - The Ferry mon 10th, early tide thru Gt Yarmouth, leave Stokesby 7am, brunch stop at St Olaves, on to Oulton Broad for Night. Pub - The Commodore (lots to choose in Oulton, Commodore is the best, IMHO) tue 11th, Oulton to Loddon. Several pubs to choose from, they tend to be different each time you visit. wed 12th, Loddon - Acle, Lunch time tide at great Yarmouth. Pub - The Bridge Inn thu 13th wroxham - acle, stopping at Horning on route. Pub - Kings Head. Finally - it's great to make plans, but they are not to be written in stone. if you get a turn in the river and decide you want to go the other way, then go with it- thats what boating is all about. The parts of the system you don't see are your justification for coming back again. hope this helps ian http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=44&Topic=19746&srow=1&erow=2 ians38@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (ians38) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 22:52:01 GMT First Time on the Broads http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=44&Topic=19746 Dreadnought - 14'6" Hazelnut canoe DISASTER :gasp: for some reason the cloth would not wet out properly - I suspect that it was too cold and the resin was not penetrating through to the wood. Recovering this meant reverting to a wet lay-up method and somehow getting resin under the quarter of the sheath that had already been wetted out. This needed some quick work to repair the damage within the pot life of the resin already applied. No pics of this for obvious resons! However in the end it was a success and the pic shows the hull with the first coat of resin squeegeed out. I would have liked to get a second coat on tonight, unfortunately it is going to be too cold so it looks like another delay for a full cure and more sanding before I can progress. :( John BITTERN 65 http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=49&Topic=19381&srow=36&erow=46 johnm@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (johnm) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 21:13:13 GMT Projects http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=49&Topic=19381 dawncraft 22 for sale Does she even need a refit? From the rather extensive pictures, it would appear that she has a perfectly usable fitout, albeit one that would benefit a lot from having the cushions recovered, the carpet replaced, and perhaps a rub down and a couple of coats of varnish (but only if you wanted to be picky). The outside looks like it'd benefit from the attentions of a pressure washer and a good polish, but overall looks in pretty good nick, considering. Other things to consider are whether she has a BSS certificate (as she's been on BW waters at some point in the past she may have had one, and so may still be mostly compliant even if she doesn't have a current certificate), and when the gas system was installed (as if she's been standing around for as long as all of the algae would suggest, perishable parts like flexible hoses or regulators might be out of date). Looks like she could be a good deal for somebody (not me, not enough bits of string to fiddle with). http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=25&Topic=19735&srow=1&erow=7 Teadaemon@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (Teadaemon) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 20:42:30 GMT Boats http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=25&Topic=19735 mooring for my elysian 27 I believe there may be a free space at Goodchilds if you did fancy the south. Upper Thurne having a 'safety valve' effect at certain locations probably is the best solution at this time. The comment on the Yare (Acle) is an example of the many ways tides and flows work. You can have a river flowing out on an ebb whilst actually rising in water level due to the converging flow gradients. The volumetric capacity of the Bure is also acting as a partial 'reservoir' under certain conditions. All interesting things, to me, anyway. Yes, I'll be hiring in April on a 33 footer but have owned boats in the past up to 40', both single and twin screw. It's nice that people still offer to help you moor up but, and please don't take this the wrong way, I often decline the help offered. Why you may ask? Well, the wife and I have got mooring down to a fine art. I know what's expected of her with the bow line and she knows what to expect from me with the engine and stern line. Sometimes an offer of help can throw us out of sync as was the case once when someone kindly took our bow line and pulled it so thight the stern swung out. Not what I was expecting! We'll always ask for help from anyone if the un-predictable happens though. So, if you do see me over April, be you a hirer or privateer, please dont be offended if we politely refuse your help. So as per a lot of the previous posts, it's hard to tell the difference between a hire boat with private experience and a private boat. We're all the same apart from those knobs who give the Broads a bad name. And the Thames is just as bad but mainly due to first time private owners who refuse whatever help is offered - after all, they know best don't they. http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=19642&srow=114&erow=124 SetFair@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (SetFair) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:15:05 GMT General Chat http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=19642 Live Music - Thurne Lion - Fri 19th March www.hard-rain-band.co.uk We are back at the Lion Inn, Thurne (at the end of Thurne Dyke) next Friday 19th March (error in title - can't fix). kicking off at 8.30pm Cheers R This message was edited by guitarman on Mar-10-10 @ 11:17 AM http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=19&Topic=19738&srow=1&erow=1 guitarman@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (guitarman) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 11:14:20 GMT Pubs and Restaurants http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=19&Topic=19738 Acle marina went there a couple of weeks ago its was raining cats and dogs but the wind last week was blowing nice and cold roll on summer, mooring should be fun then Bill Gary 1hr 45mins 66mls away http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=47&Topic=19712&srow=13&erow=23 zacthedog@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (zacthedog) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 09:48:14 GMT Moorings http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=47&Topic=19712 Japanese Knotweed Problem ?? Don't worry about those little bugs. In the unlikely event of their population getting out of control, there is a small bird that will eat nothing else, the 'Rosy breasted Nutscratcher'. This delightful little bird is both attractive to look at and has a wonderful and distinctive song. Normally a resident of the Patagonian rain forests, this little bird will nest willingly in tit boxes or in any other small enclosure, having an average brood of 14 chicks twice a year. This bird's only natural predator is of course the Patagonian tree frog, a bright orange amphibian who's diet is solely Nutscratcher eggs. Given the number of eggs this frog eats, which is many, the only problem it has is one of the regularity of it's bowels. This difficulty has been overcome by the frog in an ingenious way. Somehow, this frog has discovered that if it rubs it's rear end on certain leaves, the effect is that of a laxative. Polygonum cuspidatum or Fallopia japonica (Japanese Knotweed) is perfect for this. When you can fake those, you've cracked it. http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=5188&srow=11&erow=21 Maurice_Mynah@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (Maurice_Mynah) Wed, 10 Mar 2010 09:38:16 GMT General Chat http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=5188 In Wroxham?
